Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

It can sometimes be a little bit difficult to convince patients that it’s important to visit the dentist when they aren’t in pain but making it a part of your routine to visit us for preventive care twice a year can save you a lot of time and money.

Most dental emergencies, like toothaches or broken teeth, are actually a consequence of serious oral health problems that have existed for a while. Checkups allow us to find these problems and address them quickly. Moreover, these appointments tend to be more affordable than root canals and fillings.

If you visit us just twice a year for preventive care, the odds are that you’ll spend a lot less time and money on your teeth in the long run.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

The purpose of a dental checkup is to take a look at the overall condition of your smile. This will first involve visually inspecting your teeth, gums, and any existing dental work. We’ll also take this time to examine the soft tissues in your mouth for any abnormalities that could be indicative of oral cancer. If it’s been a while since your last checkup, we’ll also take x-rays to determine what’s happening underneath the surface.

If we find any problems, we’ll develop a treatment plan that can help you. Otherwise, we’ll talk to you about how best you can improve your dental hygiene and update your medical history to reflect any changes since your last appointment.

What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

Even if you’re thorough with your daily dental hygiene, there are naturally going to be parts of your mouth that you aren’t going to be able to reach on your own. At your dental cleaning, we’ll use specialized tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup from the back of the mouth, just below the gumline, and anywhere else that appears to need a little bit of extra attention. This greatly increases your risk of developing tooth decay or gum disease.

We’ll then floss and polish your teeth, leaving your smile with the straight-from-the-dentist clean feeling that our patients love! If you’re interested in protecting your teeth quickly and easily, make an appointment for a checkup and cleaning today!
