What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps bonded over your injured tooth so that you can continue using it for basic tasks like speaking and eating. They’re made from durable materials, like EMAX porcelain or zirconia, that can be color-matched to your natural teeth for seamless results.

These restorations are often used to:

  • Protect a weakened tooth from potential physical trauma or infection.
  • Cover a cracked, broken, or decayed tooth to preserve its functionality.
  • Anchor a dental bridge in place.
  • Attach to a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.
  • Shield a tooth that recently underwent a root canal procedure.

The Dental Crown Process

Our team at Dentalworks Hawaii proudly offers same-day CEREC crowns that we can create onsite to reduce your wait time. The step-by-step process typically includes:

  • Consultation & Preparation. First, you’ll need to consult with one of our providers to ensure that no pre-existing issues, like cavities or gum disease, will interfere with your results. If everything checks out, we’ll prepare your tooth by gently removing a thin layer of enamel so your crown fits correctly on top of it.
  • Making Impressions. We use digital X-rays and impressions that are loaded into our CEREC programs and equipment to create a 3D virtual model of your mouth.
  • Design & Fabrication. One of our dentists will design your dental crown using this information and send it to an on-site milling machine to be created.
  • Once the machine has carved your restoration from a solid block of porcelain or zirconia, we’ll polish it to a shine and ensure it fits like a glove before sending you on your way.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Understanding more about the advantages of dental crowns can help you make an informed decision to protect your oral health. There are many benefits to being fitted with one of these prosthetics, such as:

  • Improved chewing power. A damaged tooth can become achy or inflamed when grinding your food, which can be alleviated by covering it up.
  • Preserve your existing teeth. Missing teeth result in a weakened jawbone that alters your facial structure, but with dental crowns, you can prevent an extraction.
  • Versatile solution. You can enhance your appearance and safeguard your grin simultaneously.
  • Natural look and feel. These prosthetics can be completely customized to look just like the teeth you were born with.
  • Easy to clean. Maintaining them is as simple as brushing and flossing twice daily and scheduling a routine checkup with our team every 6 months.
